Can A Soured Work Relationship Be Fixed?

It's one question that has crossed everyone's mind at least once. Tell me if I'm wrong?

It can be a conflict with a co-worker, boss, supervisor or direct report.

Some of the most common reasons for work conflicts being:

  • Misunderstandings based on half or wrong information
  • False assumptions
  • Conflict of interest
  • Ego clashes
  • Different working styles
  • Micromanagement
  • Misconduct

Q. Can the issues be addressed and the situation be changed for the better?

A. In all honesty, as long as both people involved want to resolve the conflict, it is definitely possible. Otherwise too, isn’t this out best bet?

So how to get started?  Well, it all gets started with YOU J

Here are some simple tips if applied aptly, are going to make a huge difference and soften your soured work relationship:

  1. Don't take things personally- Whenever you end up asking yourself 'why me'? or 'how can he/she do that to me?' is where you should become more aware of this and understand that's it not you but just work or business and nothing personal.

  1. Drop 'I'm right, you're wrong' thinking- Rather focus on the best interest of the company, keep that as your goal.

  1. Communicate wisely, clearly and at the right time & place- This can't be emphasized enough. Making a well-intended communication is crucial in order to resolve any conflicts. As Ankur Warikoo, Founder of Nearbuy.com puts it together "If you don’t ask, the answer is always no." Also, the right thing said at the wrong time is the wrong thing, so it’s important to care about the timing you choose to do the discussion (and in some cases, the place too).

Sometimes, change of ambience plays an important part in moving the needle in terms of having a fruitful discussion and finding common ground.

  1. Don't fall prey to assumptions- Instead, get them out of your way by asking the right questions and communicating well.

  1. Be empathetic- Try to understand the other person's stance and situation. Probably you can find a possible reason, hence a solution as you do that.
